Our Mission

Opportunity shouldn't depend on your neighbourhood.

Salman Khan Hyderabad Foundation was founded on a simple premise: every family in this city deserves a fair shot, regardless of which neighbourhood they were born into. We work directly with local communities — not around them — to fund school fees, distribute food relief, and connect families to affordable healthcare.

Every program is designed with an exit plan. Our goal isn't dependency; it's a community that no longer needs us.

  • Locally led — founded and run by residents of Hyderabad
  • Every donation and disbursement recorded and shared openly
  • Direct support — funds go straight to families and verified local partners

A Note From Our Founder

"I started this in my own neighbourhood, one family at a time."

Salman Khan founded this initiative after seeing how quickly a single setback — a lost job, a medical bill, a missed school fee — could derail a family in his own community. What began as informal help for neighbours has grown into a foundation supporting families across Hyderabad.

Every rupee donated is tracked and every family supported is verified in person before help is given.

How to Refer a Family for Assistance

Many families who need help never ask for it — out of pride or because they don't know where to go. That's why referrals from teachers, neighbours, imams, priests and community leaders matter so much.

Who can refer

Anyone who knows the family's situation. Teachers often spot children at risk of dropping out; neighbours notice when a household is struggling.

Information to share

  • The family's name, area and a contact number
  • What has happened and what kind of help seems needed
  • How you know the family
  • Whether the family knows you are referring them (please ask them first)

What happens next

We contact the family, arrange a verification visit, and decide what support fits. With the family's permission, we'll let you know the outcome.

Respecting privacy

Referral details are kept confidential and used only to assess support.

Make a referral

Email info@salmankhanhyderabad.org or call/WhatsApp us using the number on our contact section. Help is always free.

Why We Verify Every Family in Person

People sometimes ask why we don't just send help as soon as someone asks. The answer is simple: a short visit makes our support fairer, safer and more useful.

It helps us understand the real need

A phone call might say "school fees," but a visit might reveal that a parent is also unwell, or that the rent is overdue. Seeing the full picture lets us help in the right way.

It protects donors

Donors trust us to spend their money where it is truly needed. Verification is how we keep that promise.

It protects families

Visits are done respectfully, by trained volunteers, usually in pairs. We don't photograph families without permission and we never publish their names.

What a visit looks like

  1. A volunteer calls to fix a convenient time.
  2. Two volunteers visit, introduce themselves and show ID.
  3. They listen, note the need, and may ask to see a bill or fee notice.
  4. The team decides within a few days and informs the family.

Our volunteers will never ask for money during a visit. If anyone does, please tell us immediately.

Supporting Families Through a Sudden Job Loss

Most families we meet were managing fine until one thing changed — usually a lost job. Rent, school fees and groceries keep coming, and savings run out fast. Our Family Assistance Program is designed for exactly this moment.

What we can help with

  • A ration kit so the family eats while they look for work
  • Keeping children in school by covering fees for a term
  • Urgent medical bills if illness was part of the crisis
  • Guidance on government welfare schemes the family may qualify for

What we don't do

We do not give loans, and we do not promise jobs. We do not charge any fee. Our aim is short-term stability, so the family can recover on its own terms.

Small steps that help

  • Talk to the school early about fees — most will wait if you explain.
  • Avoid high-interest informal loans wherever possible.
  • Register with local employment exchanges and skill programmes.

Getting help

Contact us directly, or ask someone you trust to refer your family. A volunteer will visit and listen before anything is decided.

Back-to-School Checklist for Families on a Tight Budget

The start of a school year can cost more than a month's income. A little planning goes a long way. Here is a simple checklist we share with the families we work with.

Must-haves

  • Fees paid or a written fee plan agreed with the school
  • Two sets of uniform and one pair of shoes
  • Required textbooks and notebooks
  • A basic geometry box and stationery

Ways to save

  • Second-hand textbooks from older students are often in good condition.
  • Ask the school about fee instalments — many agree if asked early.
  • Check government schemes such as free textbooks and uniforms in government schools, and scholarships for eligible students.
  • Buy uniforms a size larger so they last the whole year.

Don't forget health

An eye check before school starts can make a big difference — many children struggle in class simply because they can't see the board.

If you still can't manage

Please don't take your child out of school. Read how to apply for our school fee support.

How We Track Every Rupee You Donate

Trust is earned through records, not slogans. Here is how money moves through our foundation from the moment you donate.

1. Every donation is receipted

Each gift is logged with the date, amount and donor details, and a receipt is issued. Donations are received only into the foundation's registered bank account.

2. Support is paid to the source

Wherever possible we pay the school, the pharmacy, the hospital or the wholesaler directly. Cash to individuals is avoided, which keeps a clear paper trail.

3. Each family has a file

For every family we support, we keep a short record: the verification visit, what was provided and the bills paid. Personal details stay private, but totals are open.

4. Accounts are reviewed

Our accounts are prepared each year [and audited by a chartered accountant — update with your details]. Summaries appear in our annual report.

5. You can ask

Any donor can request a record of how their gift was used. We will tell you honestly, including when a program did not work as planned and what we changed.

Volunteering in Hyderabad: How to Start With Us

You don't need money to make a difference — a few hours of your time can be just as valuable. Volunteers are the backbone of everything we do in Hyderabad.

Roles we need

  • Tutors — help children with maths, English and science after school
  • Medical volunteers — doctors, nurses and pharmacists for camps
  • Field volunteers — visit families to verify needs and follow up
  • Food drive helpers — packing and delivering ration kits
  • Skilled volunteers — accounting, design, photography, data entry

Time commitment

Most volunteers give two to four hours a week or join on weekends. Students are welcome, and we can provide a volunteering certificate after regular participation.

How sign-up works

  1. Send us a message with your name, area and the role you're interested in.
  2. We arrange a short phone or in-person chat.
  3. You join a first activity alongside an experienced volunteer.

Our volunteer promise

We will never ask volunteers to pay a fee to join. We respect your time, give clear tasks, and keep you updated on the results your work makes possible.

Ready? Get in touch.

How to Check a Charity Is Genuine Before You Donate

Donation fraud is real, and it hurts honest charities as much as donors. We would rather you check us carefully than give blindly. Here is the checklist we recommend for any organisation, including ours.

1. Ask for the registration

A genuine Indian charity is usually registered as a Trust, a Society or a Section 8 company. Ask for the registration number and a copy of the certificate. If the organisation claims tax benefits for donors, ask for its 80G certificate.

2. Check the contact details

A local charity should have a local address and phone number. Be careful if an Indian charity only gives foreign phone numbers, or only a WhatsApp chat with no address.

3. Foreign donations need FCRA

An Indian charity can legally accept money from abroad only if it holds FCRA registration. If you live outside India, ask for the FCRA number before you give.

4. Never pay into a personal account without a receipt

Genuine charities issue receipts. Be cautious of requests to send money to an individual's account or wallet with no paperwork.

5. Watch for promises that sound too good

No charity can guarantee visas, overseas jobs, lottery prizes or "free" government benefits in exchange for a fee. These are common scam patterns.

6. Be wary of celebrity names

Fraudsters often borrow famous names to look official. Our founder shares his name with a well-known actor, but we are not connected to him or to the Being Human Foundation, and we never suggest otherwise.

Ask us anything

Email info@salmankhanhyderabad.org for our registration documents or a record of how past donations were used.

Free Medical Camps in Hyderabad: What to Expect

Many families delay seeing a doctor because of the cost, the travel or the lost day's wages. Our free medical camps bring basic care into the neighbourhood instead.

Services usually available

  • General check-ups by qualified doctors
  • Blood pressure and blood sugar screening
  • Eye check-ups and referrals for spectacles
  • Basic medicines prescribed at the camp
  • Health advice for mothers, children and elderly people

Specific services depend on which partner doctors and clinics join each camp. We announce details in advance.

What to bring

  • Any old prescriptions or medical reports
  • A list of medicines you currently take
  • An ID card (helpful for referrals, not required to be seen)

After the camp

A camp is only a first step. If a doctor finds something that needs more attention, our volunteers help the patient book an appointment at a government hospital or partner clinic and, where needed, support with travel or test costs.

A note on safety

Camps are run with registered medical practitioners. We do not offer surgery or specialist treatment at camps, and we never charge for consultations.

Are you a doctor or nurse?

We are always looking for medical volunteers who can give a few hours a month. Read how volunteering works.

Food Relief ·

What Goes Into a Monthly Ration Kit — and Why

A ration kit is the simplest thing we do, and one of the most important. For a family that has lost its income, a month of staple food buys time to recover without borrowing at high interest.

A typical kit

Contents change with prices and season, but a standard kit for a family of four to five usually includes:

  • Rice and wheat flour (atta)
  • Toor dal or another pulse
  • Cooking oil
  • Sugar, salt and tea
  • Basic spices — turmeric, chilli powder
  • Soap and a small hygiene pack

How we choose items

We ask families what they actually cook. Kits are built around everyday Hyderabadi meals rather than packaged food, so nothing is wasted. We buy in bulk from local wholesalers, which keeps the cost per kit low and supports small businesses in the city.

Who receives kits

Kits go to families verified by our team — widows, elderly people living alone, daily-wage workers out of work, and families caring for someone who is seriously ill. Each family is reviewed again every few months so support reaches whoever needs it most.

Dignity in distribution

We avoid crowded public handouts and photos that embarrass recipients. Where possible, volunteers deliver kits to homes or hand them out at small, scheduled pickups.

Sponsor a kit

You can sponsor a single kit or commit to monthly support for one family. Every donor receives a receipt, and donation records are shared with supporters on request. See how to donate.

How to Apply for School Fee Support in Hyderabad

Every year, children in Hyderabad leave school not because they want to, but because a fee deadline arrives at the wrong moment. Our Education Support Program exists to stop that from happening. This guide explains exactly how a parent or guardian can ask for help.

Who can apply

Any family living in Hyderabad or nearby areas of Telangana whose child is enrolled — or about to enrol — in a government, aided or low-fee private school. We give priority to families who have faced a recent setback such as job loss, illness or the death of an earning member.

What we can cover

  • Term or annual school fees, paid directly to the school
  • Uniforms, shoes and school bags
  • Textbooks, notebooks and stationery
  • Exam fees for Class 10 and Class 12 students

Documents to keep ready

  • The child's school ID card or admission letter
  • The latest fee notice from the school
  • Any ID proof for the parent or guardian (Aadhaar, ration card or voter ID)
  • A short note on why the family needs support right now

How the review works

Once you contact us, a volunteer will call you within a few days. A member of our team then visits your home and, where possible, speaks with the school. We pay fees directly to the school, never in cash to individuals. This keeps every rupee traceable for our donors.

Important: help is always free

We never charge an application fee, a "processing fee" or any other amount. If anyone asks you for money in our name, do not pay, and please report it to us.

How to apply

Call or WhatsApp us, email info@salmankhanhyderabad.org, or ask a teacher, neighbour or community leader to refer your family.
